Astrology gives symbolic meaning to these placements. The calculations can identify where a body or chart angle falls in the zodiac; they do not prove personality, predict events, or determine what will happen in a relationship, career, or health situation.
Why the Big Six gives more context than a Sun sign
A Sun sign is one placement in a larger chart. It can be a useful starting point, but it does not describe the Moon, the Rising sign, or the personal planets that astrology traditionally connects with communication, affection, and motivation.
The Big Six gathers six commonly discussed placements in one result:
- Sun gives the familiar sign most people know.
- Moon adds a traditional lens for private reactions, comfort needs, and emotional rhythms.
- Rising describes the chart’s horizon point and establishes the orientation of the houses.

Someone may have a confident Leo Sun, a cautious Virgo Moon, an outgoing Sagittarius Rising, Mercury in Cancer, Venus in Gemini, and Mars in Taurus. In astrological interpretation, that combination offers more specific material for reflection than “Leo” alone. It also explains why a person may recognize part of a Sun-sign description yet feel that it misses important parts of their experience.
The six signs do not need to “match.” A chart can contain several elements, modalities, and contrasting sign qualities. Birth date
The date establishes the general astronomical moment. It is necessary for all six placements because the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars move through the zodiac over time.
The Sun usually remains in one tropical zodiac sign for weeks, while the Moon moves much faster. Mercury, Venus, and Mars each have their own changing speeds and retrograde periods. A date alone can sometimes identify a likely Sun sign, but it cannot reliably produce the complete Big Six.
Birth time
Birth time is especially important for the Rising sign, houses, degrees, and aspects. The Ascendant is the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at a particular moment and location. As Earth rotates, that horizon moves through the zodiac quickly. A difference of a few hours can produce a different Rising sign.
Time also matters for the Moon. The Moon changes position far more rapidly than the Sun, and a birth near a sign boundary can make the exact hour relevant to its sign and degree.
If your recorded time is uncertain, treat the Rising sign, house placements, and aspects as more tentative. The planetary signs may still be useful to explore, but the chart’s angle-based details depend on the accuracy of the time supplied.
Birthplace
Your birthplace provides the geographic coordinates needed to determine the local horizon and house cusps. The calculator derives the relevant time zone from those coordinates and converts the local birth moment to UTC for the astronomical calculation.
Birthplace has its strongest effect on the Rising sign and houses. It does not usually change the zodiac sign of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Mars for the same correctly converted birth moment, but it is still essential for a complete chart calculation.
How the calculator turns birth details into signs
The big six signs calculator begins with the entered local birth details and converts the birth moment to UTC. It then converts that moment to a Julian Day UT, a standard time value used in astronomical calculations.
Swiss Ephemeris calculates the ecliptic longitudes of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. An ecliptic longitude is a position around a 360-degree circle measured along the ecliptic, the apparent yearly path of the Sun through the sky. The Moon and planets appear near this same band because the solar system is broadly arranged around a shared plane.
For the Rising sign, the calculator calculates house cusps from the birth moment and geographic coordinates. The first house cusp provides the Ascendant, the zodiac point on the eastern horizon.
The tropical zodiac divides the full circle into twelve equal sectors of 30 degrees:

A calculated longitude belongs to one of those sectors. For example, a longitude of 134° falls in Leo and sits 14° into the sign. The result presents that sign and degree for each Big Six placement.
This is a tropical Western astrology calculation. The twelve tropical signs are equal zodiac sectors beginning from the March equinox point. They are different from the unequal astronomical constellations visible in the sky. Ophiuchus is a constellation along the ecliptic, but it is not a thirteenth sign in this twelve-sign calculation.
What appears in your results
Your result provides more than six sign labels. For each placement, you can inspect the calculated sign, degree within the sign, and house placement. The Moon result also includes the calculated lunar phase.

When aspect data is available, the result can also show aspects involving at least one of the Big Six placements. An aspect is a calculated angular relationship between two chart positions. A conjunction is near 0°, a sextile near 60°, a square near 90°, a trine near 120°, and an opposition near 180°. The displayed aspect is chart geometry. Astrology’s interpretation of that geometry is traditional and symbolic.
Signs, degrees, and houses answer different questions
A sign tells you which 30-degree zodiac sector contains a placement. A degree shows its more exact position inside that sector. A house places the body or point within the chart’s local horizon-based structure.
In traditional reading, these layers are often considered together:
- Planet or point: what kind of theme is being considered.
- Sign: the style or quality traditionally associated with that theme.
- House: the life area where astrology places that theme.
- Aspect: the angular relationship between placements.
For example, “Venus in Libra” and “Venus in Libra in the sixth house” are not identical statements in astrology. The sign stays the same, while the house adds a separate context. A Venus aspect may add another layer. The calculator gives you the chart facts needed to see those distinctions before reading an interpretation.
Reading each placement with some precision
Traditional meanings work best as prompts rather than labels to live inside. A sign description can help you name tendencies, contradictions, preferences, or patterns worth discussing. It cannot settle who you are.

A Sun sign does not erase the rest of the chart. Someone with a fiery Sun may have a water-sign Moon and a reserved Rising sign. Moon sign: inner habits and emotional weather
Astrology traditionally associates the Moon with emotional needs, instinctive responses, memory, and familiar ways of restoring equilibrium. It can be a useful reflective lens for questions such as: What helps me feel settled? What do I do when I am overwhelmed? What kind of care do I find easy to receive or offer?
The Moon’s astronomical position is calculated for the moment of birth. The emotional meaning attached to that position comes from astrology, not from a scientific measurement of mood or mental health. A Moon-sign interpretation is not a diagnosis.
Rising sign: the horizon point of the chart
The Rising sign is also called the Ascendant. It is an angle rather than a planet, calculated from the eastern horizon at your birth time and place. It is particularly sensitive to accurate data.
Traditional astrology links the Ascendant with first impressions, physical presence, immediate approach to new situations, and the way a person enters the world. Since it also anchors the chart’s houses, a changed Rising sign can change the house layout throughout the chart.

Why a house system appears in the chart data
House systems divide the chart into twelve houses from the birth time and location. This calculator records a house system with the birth data and calculates house placements accordingly. The default calculation uses Placidus when no other house system is passed.
A house system affects house cusps and therefore can affect which house contains a planet. It generally does not change the zodiac sign of your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Mars, because those signs come from their ecliptic longitudes.
The Ascendant remains a chart angle tied to the horizon, though house systems can organize the rest of the chart differently around it. If you compare charts made with different house systems, separate the stable sign placements from the house-placement differences before drawing conclusions.
At very high latitudes, some house systems have technical limitations. The calculator handles Placidus and Koch calculations beyond 66.5° north or south by limiting the latitude used for their cusp calculation. This can affect house results for births in polar regions.
A few useful checks before interpreting a result
A calculated chart can be inspected rather than taken on trust. Start with the factual fields:
- Confirm that the displayed birth date, time, and place are correct.
- Check the six sign and degree results.
- Notice whether your birth time is documented, estimated, or uncertain.
- Read the house placements in light of the house system shown.
- Look at aspects as angles and orbs before reading symbolic descriptions.
