The North Node is a calculated point in the Moon’s orbit, not a planet or physical object. It marks the place where the Moon crosses the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent path through the sky, moving northward. Its opposite point is the South Node, where the Moon crosses southward.

Your North Node and South Node are always exactly opposite each other. A North Node in Aries, for example, comes with a South Node in Libra. The signs form an axis, so interpretation works best when both ends are considered together.

What the calculator uses

Enter your birth date, birth time, and birthplace. The calculator uses the birthplace coordinates to identify the local time zone, converts the birth moment to UTC, and calculates the corresponding Julian Day. It then uses Swiss Ephemeris data to determine the North Node’s ecliptic longitude.

True Node calculation

Astronomers and ephemeris systems can calculate the Moon’s nodes in more than one way. A Mean Node smooths the node’s movement into an average path. A True Node follows the Moon’s changing, observed orbital motion more closely, including small oscillations caused by gravitational influences.

The distinction can explain why two calculators occasionally return different results. Most of the time, Mean Node and True Node remain in the same sign. Differences become more likely near a sign boundary, where a small shift in longitude can place the node on either side of the 30-degree division.

Why the North and South Nodes are opposite

The Moon’s orbit is tilted by about 5.145 degrees relative to the ecliptic. That tilted orbit intersects the ecliptic at two points. One is the ascending, or North, Node; the other is the descending, or South, Node.

Because those intersection points sit across from each other on a circle, they are separated by 180 degrees. The calculation reflects that geometry: the South Node is found by taking the North Node’s longitude and adding 180 degrees.

This means the nodal signs always occur in opposing pairs:

The same opposition applies to houses. If your North Node falls in the 2nd house, the South Node falls in the 8th; a North Node in the 5th places the South Node in the 11th.

Astronomically, the nodal axis also has a role in eclipses. A New Moon or Full Moon needs to occur near one of the nodes for an eclipse to happen. The Sun passes near a lunar node roughly every 173 days, creating the recurring periods known as eclipse seasons.

North Node meaning in astrology

In modern Western astrology, the North Node is commonly interpreted as a direction of growth. It is associated with qualities that may feel less automatic, unfamiliar, or worth consciously developing over time.
