Find your Sun sign from your birth date and learn what it says about identity, confidence, purpose, and zodiac sign cusp accuracy.

Find the Sun’s zodiac position at your birth

Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at the moment you were born. Enter your birth date, birth time, and birthplace above to calculate that placement from ephemeris data rather than relying on a calendar-date list.

The result gives you three calculated details:

  • Sun sign: the 30-degree zodiac section containing the Sun
  • Degree: the Sun’s position within that sign
  • House: the area of the natal chart containing the Sun, based on the birth time, location, and house system

The calculator also creates a focused natal chart with the Sun visible, shows aspects involving the Sun when they are present in the chart data, and offers a path to your full birth chart.

What a Sun sign measures

Astronomically, planetary positions in a natal chart are expressed as ecliptic longitude: a position from 0° to 360° around the ecliptic. The ecliptic is the plane of Earth’s orbit, and from Earth the Sun appears to travel along this path over the course of a year.

Western tropical astrology divides that circle into 12 equal signs of 30 degrees each:

SignEcliptic longitude
Aries0° to under 30°
Taurus30° to under 60°
Gemini60° to under 90°
Cancer90° to under 120°
Leo120° to under 150°
Virgo150° to under 180°
Libra180° to under 210°
Scorpio210° to under 240°
Sagittarius240° to under 270°
Capricorn270° to under 300°
Aquarius300° to under 330°
Pisces330° to under 360°

If the calculated longitude is 145°, for example, the Sun is in Leo at 25° Leo. The sign is a mathematical classification of the Sun’s longitude. The degree gives its more precise position inside that 30-degree section.

This tool uses the tropical zodiac used in much modern Western astrology. Tropical signs are symbolic 30-degree divisions, not the same thing as the modern astronomical constellations behind the Sun. Because Earth’s axis slowly shifts over long periods, constellations and tropical zodiac signs do not line up in a one-to-one way.

How this calculator finds your sign

A sun sign calculator needs more than a broad date range to be precise. The form uses your birth information to establish a specific moment and location.

First, your local birth date and time are converted to UTC using the timezone associated with your birthplace coordinates. That UTC moment is converted to a Julian day, a standard astronomical time value. Swiss Ephemeris then calculates the Sun’s geocentric ecliptic longitude for that time.

The calculator assigns the longitude to one of the 12 tropical zodiac signs and calculates the degree within that sign. It also calculates house cusps from the time and geographic coordinates, then identifies the house containing the Sun.

That produces several kinds of output with different roles:

  • Sign and degree are derived from the Sun’s calculated longitude.
  • House is derived from the Sun’s longitude in relation to the chart’s house cusps.
  • Aspects describe measured angular relationships between the Sun and other chart points.
  • Interpretive text draws on astrology traditions to help you reflect on the placement.

The calculation is a coordinate-and-time problem. The interpretation is a symbolic framework layered onto those coordinates.

Why birth time and birthplace are included

For many people, a date-based sign lookup returns the same result as a full calculation. The exception is important: people born near a sign change can have the Sun move from one sign to another during their birth date.

A familiar date range such as “Aries begins on March 21” is an approximation. The Sun reaches a sign boundary at a particular time, and that time varies by year. A person born near the change needs an accurate time and a correct timezone conversion to determine the appropriate tropical sign.

Birthplace also helps identify the timezone for the stated local birth time. For the Sun sign itself, the crucial issue is converting local time to the correct UTC moment. A birth location does not materially change the Sun’s geocentric ecliptic longitude in the way it changes chart angles.

Location matters much more for the house result. Houses describe the chart’s local orientation from a particular place on Earth. Change the birthplace or birth time, and the Ascendant, house cusps, and Sun’s house can change even when the Sun sign stays the same.

If you know your date but not your birth time, use the closest reliable time you have with care. The Sun sign may still be stable, especially away from a sign boundary, but the house placement and chart angles are less dependable.

The Sun sign in astrology tradition

In modern Western astrology, the natal Sun is commonly associated with identity, central motivation, vitality, and conscious self-expression. These are traditional symbolic meanings. They are not physical effects measured from the Sun’s distance, light, or gravitational force at birth.

A Sun placement can offer language for reflecting on questions such as:

  • What qualities feel central to how I want to live?
  • Where do I feel most purposeful or self-directed?
  • What kind of recognition, contribution, or creative expression matters to me?
  • Which traits do I identify with, resist, or grow into over time?

Astrology does not provide scientific proof of personality, compatibility, health, or future events. A Sun sign description can be useful as a prompt for journaling or conversation when it feels specific and honest; it should not substitute for evidence, professional advice, or your lived experience.

The Sun is one factor in a natal chart. Even within astrology, reducing someone to a single sign leaves out the Moon, Ascendant, planets, houses, aspects, and the rest of the chart’s structure.

Reading your sign, degree, and house together

The result begins with a plain statement such as “Sun in Virgo” or “Sun in Sagittarius.” That is the sign-level placement. The degree and house add context within the chart.

The sign

In astrology, the sign describes the style traditionally associated with the Sun. A Sun in a fire sign may be interpreted through initiative, expression, or conviction; a Sun in an earth sign through practicality, consistency, or tangible results. Air signs are often read through ideas, exchange, or perspective, while water signs are often linked with feeling, intuition, and attachment.

Those elemental groupings are broad interpretive categories. They are a starting point, not a personality test.

Each sign also has its own traditional language. For example:

  • Aries Sun is often interpreted through independence, action, and directness.
  • Taurus Sun is often interpreted through steadiness, values, and persistence.
  • Gemini Sun is often interpreted through curiosity, language, and variety.
  • Cancer Sun is often interpreted through protection, belonging, and emotional continuity.
  • Leo Sun is often interpreted through creative expression, visibility, and generosity.
  • Virgo Sun is often interpreted through discernment, service, and refinement.
  • Libra Sun is often interpreted through relationship, balance, and social awareness.
  • Scorpio Sun is often interpreted through depth, privacy, and intensity.
  • Sagittarius Sun is often interpreted through exploration, meaning, and candor.
  • Capricorn Sun is often interpreted through responsibility, structure, and long-range aims.
  • Aquarius Sun is often interpreted through independence of thought, groups, and reform.
  • Pisces Sun is often interpreted through imagination, sensitivity, and permeability.

A useful reading asks whether a description fits your patterns, choices, and circumstances. It does not ask you to perform a stereotype because of a label.

The degree

The degree tells you where the Sun sits within its sign, from 0° up to just under 30°. A result such as 2° Libra and a result such as 27° Libra are both Libra Suns. The degree does not create a different Sun sign.

Astrology traditions may give degrees additional symbolic emphasis, and aspects use exact degrees to measure angular relationships. For most readers, the degree becomes especially useful when looking at a full chart: it helps identify whether the Sun is closely connected to another planet or chart angle.

The displayed degree is calculated output. Any special meaning assigned to that degree belongs to interpretive tradition.

The house

The Sun’s house describes where it falls in the chart’s local house structure. In astrology, houses are commonly used to organize life areas. A Sun in the first house may be interpreted through presence and self-presentation; a Sun in the tenth house through public direction, work, or visibility. A Sun in the fourth house may invite reflection on home, roots, and private life.

The house is more sensitive than the Sun sign to an uncertain birth time. A shift in time can move house cusps and sometimes change the Sun’s house. It can also alter the Ascendant and other angles substantially.

This calculator uses house cusps to calculate the displayed house. The default house system is Placidus unless another system is passed through the chart data. House systems can change the house result, but they do not change the Sun’s zodiac sign or degree.

Aspects involving your Sun

The focused result may include aspects involving your Sun. An aspect is an angular relationship between two calculated chart positions. Major aspects include:

AspectExact angle
Conjunction
Sextile60°
Square90°
Trine120°
Opposition180°

The calculator also recognizes several minor aspect angles. An aspect is shown when the angular distance between chart points falls within the applicable orb.

For example, if your Sun and Moon are near the same degree, they may form a conjunction. If the Sun and Saturn are close to 90 degrees apart, they may form a square. These are geometric relationships in the chart. Astrology traditions interpret them as themes involving the planets and signs concerned.

A Sun-Moon aspect may be used for reflection on the relationship between conscious aims and emotional habits. A Sun-Mercury aspect can prompt thoughts about identity and communication. A Sun-Saturn aspect may be read through responsibility, confidence, discipline, or self-definition. These interpretations are possibilities for reflection, not fixed traits or predictions.

The full chart is usually the better place to explore aspects in context. A tight Sun aspect can be meaningful in traditional chart reading, but its interpretation still depends on the planets involved, signs, houses, other aspects, and the person’s real life.

Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising sign

People often begin by asking, “What is my sun sign moon sign?” These are three separate chart placements.

PlacementCalculated fromTraditional astrology focus
Sun signThe Sun’s zodiac longitude at birthidentity, purpose, conscious expression
Moon signThe Moon’s zodiac longitude at birthemotional habits, needs, instinctive responses
Rising signThe zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at birthfirst impressions, approach, chart orientation

Your Sun sign is one position. Your Moon sign requires a separate calculation of the Moon’s longitude at birth. The Moon moves much faster than the Sun, so birth time can be especially relevant when it is near a sign boundary.

The difference between rising sign and Sun sign is even more direct. The Sun sign comes from the Sun’s position along the zodiac. The rising sign, also called the Ascendant, comes from the eastern horizon at your specific time and place of birth. The Ascendant changes far more quickly and depends closely on accurate birth time and location.

A person can have a Leo Sun, a Taurus Moon, and a Sagittarius rising sign. None of these replaces the others. They describe different calculated points that astrology traditions interpret in different ways.

If you want to see the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant together, a Big Three calculation or full natal chart gives a more connected view than a Sun-only result.

Why two tools may return different Sun signs

A discrepancy is worth checking, especially if your birth date falls near a sign boundary. The common causes are practical rather than mysterious.

The birth time was missing or estimated

A date-only tool has to assume a time or rely on a general date range. If the Sun changed signs that day, a different assumed time can change the result.

The timezone or daylight-saving conversion differs

The stated birth time is local time. The calculation must convert it correctly to UTC. Historical daylight-saving rules and birthplace timezone matter here.

The birthplace differs

For a Sun sign, location mainly affects the timezone conversion. Entering a similarly named town in a different region, or choosing the wrong location, can lead to a different UTC time.

One tool uses tropical zodiac and another uses sidereal zodiac

This calculator uses tropical positions. Sidereal astrology applies a different zodiac reference, so it can produce a different sign label for the same calculated celestial longitude.

The comparison is actually about houses

Different house systems can place the Sun in different houses. That does not mean the Sun sign changed. The sign comes from the Sun’s zodiac longitude; the house comes from its relation to local house cusps.

When checking a difference, compare the birth date, exact time, birthplace, timezone treatment, zodiac type, and whether each tool is reporting a sign or a house.

A result can be precise without being absolute

The calculated placement can be checked: it is based on the entered birth moment, coordinates, timezone conversion, and ephemeris output. Accurate input improves the accuracy of the astronomical result.

The interpretive layer has a different status. Astrology uses the Sun’s sign, house, and aspects as symbols for reflection and entertainment. It cannot diagnose a condition, prove compatibility, determine a career choice, predict an event, or provide legal, medical, mental-health, financial, or investment guidance.

Use the result as a structured prompt. You might compare the traditional Sun-sign themes with the settings where you feel most engaged, the roles you choose, or the qualities you are trying to develop. You may find some language useful and leave the rest aside.

Continue from the Sun placement

The focused chart is useful when you want a clear answer to “what is my Sun sign?” The next useful question is often how that Sun placement relates to the rest of the chart.

Sun Sign Calculator FAQ

What is a sun sign in astrology?

In astrology, the Sun sign is the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at birth. Astrologers interpret it in connection with core identity, vitality, purpose, and self-expression; its house and aspects provide additional context.

What does your sun sign mean?

In astrology, the Sun sign is associated with core identity, vitality, purpose, and self-expression. Its house shows where identity seeks center stage, and aspects reveal whether solar traits feel steady, contested, or amplified by the rest of the chart.

What is the difference between a sun, moon, and rising sign?

The Sun sign describes core identity, the Moon sign describes emotional patterns, and the rising sign describes the style through which you meet life and appear to others. Together they form the “Big Three,” but the rest of the birth chart adds important context.

What is your sun sign?

Your Sun sign is found by calculating the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at birth. Enter accurate birth details in the calculator above; the result can then be interpreted through themes of core identity, vitality, purpose, and self-expression.

How do you find your sun sign from your birth date?

To learn how to find sun sign placement, enter your birth date, time, and place in the calculator. Birth time becomes important when the Sun changed signs during that date.

Do you need your birth time to calculate your sun sign?

Usually the birth date is enough, because the Sun remains in one sign for about a month. Birth time and location matter when the Sun changed signs that day, especially near a commonly published cusp date.

Is a sun sign the same as a zodiac or star sign?

In everyday horoscope language, “sun sign,” “zodiac sign,” and “star sign” usually mean the same thing: the sign the Sun occupied at birth. Technically, a full chart contains many zodiac signs, so “zodiac sign” can also refer to any planetary placement.

Why might your sun sign not feel like your personality?

A Sun sign is only one part of a birth chart. A strong Moon, rising sign, chart ruler, stellium, or aspects to the Sun can change how solar traits are expressed; people may also identify with their Sun more clearly as they mature.
