Your Descendant is the western horizon point in your natal chart at the moment and place of birth. It sits exactly opposite your Ascendant, also called your Rising sign. If your Ascendant is 12° Leo, your Descendant is 12° Aquarius. The two points form the self-and-other axis of the chart.

How the calculation works

The Descendant is calculated as the point exactly 180° opposite the Ascendant:

That longitude is placed in one of twelve equal 30° zodiac sectors.
The sign and degree are calculated chart data. Astrology’s interpretations of that result are symbolic traditions rather than scientific findings about personality, relationships, or future events.
The calculator uses Placidus house calculations by default when no other house system is attached to the birth data. House systems can affect house cusps and displayed house structure. The Descendant itself remains opposite the Ascendant, so its sign follows the Ascendant-Descendant axis.
Why your birth time matters so much
A Sun sign can often be found from a birth date alone. Your Descendant cannot. It depends on the horizon at a particular place and minute.
The Ascendant and Descendant change relatively quickly over the course of a day. A birth time that is off by several minutes may shift the degree. A larger time difference can move the Descendant into another zodiac sign, especially when the original position is close to a sign boundary.
Birthplace matters for the same reason. Two people born at the same UTC moment in different locations can have different local horizons and different chart angles. The calculator uses coordinates rather than treating a city name as decorative background information.
If your birth time is unknown, estimated, or taken from family memory, treat the result with care. An approximate time may still produce a useful starting point for reflection, but it cannot establish an exact Descendant degree with confidence. A recorded birth time gives the most dependable basis for the calculation.
High-latitude births also deserve extra care. Some house systems have limitations near polar regions. For Placidus and Koch calculations, the underlying implementation limits extreme latitude values and can use a more workable fallback if needed.
Descendant, 7th house, and the relationship axis
In astrology, the Descendant marks the beginning of the 7th house in quadrant-house frameworks. It is often abbreviated as DC, Dsc, or Desc. Because it lies opposite the Ascendant, the two angles are usually read together.
The Ascendant describes the chart’s eastern horizon and is traditionally associated with one’s immediate style of approaching life, embodiment, presentation, and first response. The Descendant describes the western horizon and is traditionally associated with encounters where another person’s needs, presence, preferences, or perspective matter.
