The Sun’s sign changes slowly enough that a birth date can usually identify it. The IC works differently. It is a local chart angle shaped by Earth’s rotation, so it moves much faster through the zodiac.
A difference in recorded birth time can change the IC degree substantially and may change the sign. Birthplace matters as well because latitude and longitude affect the local chart angles. A time-zone error can produce a similarly misleading result.

The imum coeli sign calculator converts the supplied birth information to Universal Time, derives a Julian Day value, and calculates house cusps using Swiss Ephemeris data. The IC calculation uses the default Placidus house-cusp method.
The relevant steps are straightforward:
- Your birthplace is represented by geographic latitude and longitude.
- Your local birth date and time are converted to UTC.
- The calculator derives the chart’s Midheaven from the house-cusp calculation.
- It adds 180° to the Midheaven position and normalizes the result within the 0° to 360° zodiac circle.
- That longitude is assigned to one of the twelve 30-degree tropical zodiac signs.
So the IC is calculated as the point directly opposite the MC. It is not separately searched for, and it is not a physical object moving through the sky.

The IC, the fourth house, and house systems
In Placidus and other quadrant house systems, the IC is generally treated as the cusp of the fourth house. This makes the connection between IC themes and fourth-house themes especially direct.
That relationship is not identical in every astrological framework. In Whole Sign houses, each house begins at 0° of a sign, while the IC remains a calculated angle that can fall elsewhere within the chart. It may therefore be located in a sign or house position that does not line up exactly with the fourth-house cusp.
This page calculates the IC sign from the implemented house-cusp method. It is not a full Hellenistic astrology chart calculator, and it does not provide a comparison among house systems. If you use Whole Sign houses or another traditional framework, your IC can still be meaningful within that system, but keep the distinction between the calculated angle and the fourth-house sign in view.
